FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Creator-owned graphic novel from Dark Horse wins kudos for first series

Los Angeles, CA – July 15, 2013 – Concrete Park, the critically-acclaimed new sci-fi graphic novel series from Dark Horse Comics, has been selected as one of The Best American Comics 2013 and will be featured in a hardcover book of that name to be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on October 8, 2013.

Created by screenwriter Tony Puryear (Eraser), actress Erika Alexander (Living Single, AMC’s new Low Winter Sun) and Robert Alexander, Concrete Park was first serialized in the pages of Dark Horse Presents, the 2012 Eisner Award-winning anthology. Set in a disturbing near-future, the gritty science-fiction epic deals with issues of race, poverty and exile.

The Best American Comics showcases the work of both established and up-and-coming contributors. Editor Jeff Smith—creator of the classic comic Bone, a comedy/adventure about three lost cousins from Boneville—has culled the best stories from graphic novels, pamphlet comics, newspapers, magazines, mini-comics, and web comics to create this cutting-edge collection. The Best American Series began in 1915, making it the oldest continuous series of its type. The editors for The Best American Comics series are Matt Madden and Jessica Abel.

Being selected for this prestigious showcase has a special meaning for Concrete Park’s creators. Erika Alexander explains: “Being chosen as a Best American Comic our first year out is fantastic. For African-American artists like us, it’s something more, because it’s always a struggle to have our true voice heard. It’s difficult to stay encouraged. This honor is fuel for our journey, because we know there’s a ton of work ahead of us.”

Tony Puryear adds: As a black storyteller, it’s very gratifying to be recognized for a story that deals with themes that matter to me, but that I hope will resonate with all readers.”

For veteran screenwriter but novice comics penciller/inker/colorist Puryear, this recognition is doubly sweet : “I’m a screenwriter, I write pictures. Drawing them is another thing, and I’m only just learning how. Being included in this collection, with its tradition of showcasing killer artists, is a tremendous validation.”

Concrete Park will return in 2014 with a self-titled monthly series from Dark Horse Comics.

About Concrete Park

Concrete Park has appeared monthly in the Eisner Award-winning Dark Horse Presents, edited by Dark Horse Comics founder and Publisher Mike Richardson. Concrete Park was co-created by actress Erika Alexander and her husband, the screenwriter Tony Puryear (Eraser, Fahrenheit 451) and her brother, writer Robert Alexander. It tells a dark and provocative near-future story that takes place in a turbulent city on a distant, desert planet (think Cairo or Rio in space). Young human exiles from Earth must fight to make a new world there. They are “young, violent and ten billion miles from home”. Amid the struggle to survive this harsh urban environment there is also hope and beauty, that proverbial ‘rose in Spanish Harlem’. Erika Alexander co-writes and Puryear co-writes and draws, inks and colors the book. Reviews have been glowing:

Technorati says: “Concrete Park should be a stand-alone comic. It’s gorgeous and building in intensity.”

Inside Pulse calls Concrete Park “fascinating” and adds “I’m appreciating the level of thought and planning on display in this series.” http://insidepulse.com/2012/02/06/the-weekly-round-up-113-with-dhp-planet-of-the-apes-fatale-izombie-sweet-tooth-more/

Comics Bulletin says: Every time I think I know what is going on in Concrete Park, (it) throws me for a loop. I have to read more.” http://www.comicsbulletin.com/main/reviews/advance-review-dark-horse-presents-9

Read About Comics said: “(Puryear’s) art… instantly grabbed my attention. His thick, heavy inks are striking, forming his characters with a great deal of confidence and force. Through his art, you instantly get a feel for this near-future (city); …the swagger of (the) characters and their surroundings just bursts off of the page.” http://www.readaboutcomics.com/2012/01/02/dark-horse-presents-7/

How do I buy a hard copy of Concrete Park? I’m not a fan of e-books.
